The skin is moved while applying pressure and this results in calming the nerves and this slowing of the nervous system leads to changes in other parameters like a decreasing heart rate, lowering of blood pressure and relaxation of the mind.
While it is great to have a massage done in a retreat, you don’t have to spend on a retreat every time you need some relaxation. You can always massage yourself.

- Reductions of symptoms relating to anxiety. Massage stimulates the parasympathetic system which helps calm the body and relieves anxiety and the effects are seen for a long time.
- Massage can help induce good sleep by calming your sympathetic system. When you get a massage, your nervous system itself actually slows down due to the pressure and helps in inducing deep and restorative sleep,that in turn reduces your levels of substance P (a neurotransmitter for pain), which reduces overall pain.
- A massage slows your nervous system, your heart rate is slowed down. During a massage, pressure receptors stimulate vagal nerve activity. Vagus nerve stems from the brain and supplies branches to various parts of the body including the heart.
